| BSF AWAITs CENTRE’s NOD on RE-FENCING along IB | | | Jammu, Nov 29 Border security force (BSF) on Wednesday claimed that it has brought down instances of infiltration to zero during the current year and announced that it will carry out refencing work on a stretch of 38-km long International border (IB) in Jammu sector immediately after receiving approval from the centre government. “We are awaiting approval from the central government to start re fencing work on 38 km stretch of International border in Jammu sector, BSF IG SC Vaid told reporters here in Jammu at BSF headquarterts. Vaid was addressing press conference on the occasion of 41 BSF day celebrations and claimed that infiltration this year is down to zero adding that not a single report has been received of infiltration taking place in this sector this year. Referring to re-fencing work, likely to begin shortly, Vaid said,"earlier the border fence on differnt patches, ranging between few meters to few kilometers, which always came under heavy fire was raised some distance away from the International border as it prevented them from raising the border fence close to zero line". He said, a fresh proposal has been submitted to raise the border fence close to the zero line to check infiltration bids. IG BSF said, "border fencing on a stretch of 184.8 km long border has already been completed and the work on the remaining 1.2 km long border will be over by the end of this year".Work on flood lights is also expected to complete by the year end. The project will cost approximately Rs 90 crores, he added. Commenting on the period of ceasefire, he said on one hand it has helped local farmers to go up to zero line to cultivate their land and on the other the Pakistan has remained engaged in improving its defences. He said alert BSF jawans armed with modern surveillance devices have foiled infiltration bids by armed rebels in the Jammu sector. Commenting on the militant training camps, Vaid said Pakistan is still running training camps across the border. Replying to a question on the need for modernizing BSF , he said battlefield surveillance systems, thermal imagers and night-vision devices, and other state-of-the-art surviellance equipment was being acquired in efforts to modernise the force to improve quality of vigil especially during night.
Reading out the report card of the BSF troops he disclosed that BSF has arrested 3,522 Bangladesh and Myanmar nationals trying to exfiltrate into Pakistan via the IB in the past five years with 309 Bangladeshis and 50 Myanmarese aprehended this year.
In the last one year BSF jawans killed nine militants in 17 encounters in the Jammu region and 19 AK assault rifles, 64 magazines, 6 pistols, 62 grenades, 2 IEDs, 1,861 ammunition, 67 kg of explosives, 5 landmines, 173 detonators, 15 wireless sets 7 mobile and 3 satellite phone were seized during the period, he added.
