Gradual increase in mushroom production in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 25 (KIP): As a result of government efforts the annual mushroom production in Jammu and Kashmir has gone up from about 6,000 quintals to over 8,000 quintals during the last three years.
Official sources said that the increase had been the result of various steps the Government initiated for helping the cultivators and manufacturers to add another viable source of income for them.
Sources said that first of all those engaged in the production of mushroom were given high yielding and quality seeds. Experts in the department of Agriculture and those in the two agricultural universities helped the growers in adopting new techniques. These two steps yielded better income to the farmers than from other vegetable crops or food-grains.
Finding the farmers response to mushroom cultivation was tremendous the Government started providing to them mushroom cultivation trays. Only last year between 5000 and 7000 mushroom cultivation trays were given to the farmers.
Another issue that encouraged farmers to adopt mushroom cultivation in various areas was assured market cover. One report said that per day requirement of mushroom only in Srinagar ranged between 30 and 35 kgs and when one takes into account the demand in the entire state mushroom cultivators have to wait for buyers.
Another reports said that despite increase in local production several hundred quintals of mushroom were being imported from the neighboring states. The Government is planning to motivate all the landless people to take to mushroom cultivation so that Jammu and Kashmir state was able to export mushroom which was bound to multiply the farmers' annual income.
