Soz seeks more steps to promote horti industry
Sham promises better facilities in Sopore, Bla mandis

SOPORE, BARAMULLA, JULY 25– Member Parliament and JKPCC Chief, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz has said that State and Central Governments accord top most priority to the development of horticulture industry, adding that several measures were taken over the years to make it more viable.

Addressing a large gathering of fruit growers at Sopore and Baramulla Fruit Markets, Parof Soz said that major portion of State’s population is engaged in the horticulture activities, which promise remunerative earnings to the growers. He said although State Government has done lot of work in this sector, still much needs to be done so that more and more people take to horticulture activities for strengthening State’s economy.

Appreciating the demands of the growers to establish a unit of cold storage in the main Fruit & Vegetable market at Sopore, Prof. Soz asked the Horticulture Minister to submit a proposal to Central Government for funding. He said cold storage facilities are necessary at main markets of Jammu and Srinagar to increase the shelf life of fresh fruits especially the perishable items. He said Government of India is very liberal to provide funds for the development of this important sector provided the necessary UCs under various Centrally sponsored schemes are submitted timely.

The veteran leader also asked the Minister to approach the Government of India for Crop Insurance, which the growers are demanding for some time. He assured that he will personally pursue to get the scheme sanctioned using his approach and influence. He also asked the Minister to immediately take steps to improve facilities in the Sopore Mandi.

Minister for Horticulture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma while addressing the growers at Sopore said that government was aware about the problems of the community and numerous steps have been taken to address these. He said 595 shops existing in the market were allotted to the genuine applicants in one go adding and more steps are in the pipeline to upgrade facilities in the mandi. He asked the growers to construct the shops at the allotted sites at the earliest and utilize the land for flourishing their business.
