EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 25: Students are on the road since days demanding an early establishment of the sanctioned Central University in Jammu. In between, Jammu witnessed clashes between them and the police leading to the arrest of a few students and injuries to some students and policemen. In between, students boycotted classes for the cause, thus indicating their resolve to achieve their objective at whatever cost. In between, the leadership of the Jammu Central University Morcha (JCUM), a conglomerate of several political social groups, including Jammu Revolutionary Movement, Jammu State Morcha, Duggar Pradesh Party and so on, which was the first to take up this issue and organize a bandh on May I, 2010, went all the way from Jammu to Delhi to meet Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and urged him to make the university functional without any further delay.
In between, students of RS Pura upped their ante, held massive demonstration, denounced not only the government but also the entire Jammu leadership for its negative attitude towards the demand of the student community and threatened a massive agitation in the event of the authorities not conceding their demand forth with. In between, Panther Party supremo not only met the President of India and discussed with her the dangerous ramifications of the inordinate delay in the establishment of the university but also wrote a very lengthy letter to the Prime Minister urging him to take all the necessary steps calculated to satisfy the agitating student community, including girl students. The letter was nothing but a blistering attack on the state government as well as the Central government and the letter also contained an unambiguous threat that the Panthers Party would take recourse to radical means to force the authorities to set up the sanctioned Central University. In between, the Panthers Party MLA from Samba walked out of the District Develop Board's meeting on this issue as well as on the issue of discrimination with the Samba district. In between, the Jammu University Research Scholars Association, the ABVP and a few other student organizations held demonstrations on the issue. In between, the BJP also expressed its solidarity with the agitating student community through a press release. In between the Bar Association of Jammu adopted a comprehensive resolution on the issue, condemned lathi-charge on the unarmed peaceful students and warned the government of serious repercussions in case the authorities continue to overlook the demands as being raised by the student community. Interestingly, some Congress workers also tried yesterday to identify themselves with the demand. They did surprise everyone.
All this shows the nature of mood in Jammu. There are reasons to believe that the situation in Jammu would assume alarming proportions in case the authorities did not take concrete steps to redress the grievance of the student community. The young Panthers yesterday threatened that "they would intensify their movement and not allow the educational institutions to function." They went to the extent of saying the "no police action can deter them" and that "they are committed to the cause and they will achieve their goal." Yesterday, the Jammu Province People Front (JPPF), a conglomerate of over two-dozen organizations, including sabhas and societies, declared that they would start a 15-day-long hunger strike from today. Again, yesterday, the JURSA threatened an indefinite strike in case the authorities remained indifferent to the Jammu cause.
The crux of the matter is that things have already started assuming alarming proportions in Jammu province. It is strange that the authorities have refused to appreciate the demand and the emerging situation. Why? Are they waiting for the repeat of 2008 in Jammu? Political sagacity demands a positive response from the authorities. The best thing for them would be to concede the demand without any further delay and avert the impending disaster.
