LAHDC ghost continues to haunt Omar
NC workers dismayed

Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 25: In February this year the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) adapted a new logo and flag. The council abandoned use of the state flag. The move did not cause a political storm as Omar chose to play it down. On February 28, he said LAHDC is as good as a Municipality and has a right to have its flag and logo like Municipalities of Srinagar and Jammu.
However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concern and termed the development as unfortunate. The PDP president, Mahbooba Mufti said it was an act to dilute the special status of the state. "Any act aimed at diluting our special status shall be vehemently opposed", she said.
Sensing that his casual approach to the development had evoked severe criticism, Omar he was watching the developments. "I am watching the developments. A final decision shall be taken after ascertaining the facts", he said.
Six months have passed and no action has been taken for blatant violation of Jammu Kashmir Constitution. Kashmir watchers perceive it as a compromise on the special status of the state.
The commoner on the street in Kashmir is as indifferent to the development today as he was in February. However, senior National Conference workers seem disturbed over the way party high command has been handling issues of grave importance. One such worker while talking to Early Times said: "No action was taken against persons who desecrated the state flag on Republic day at Jammu. It seems the leadership is scared of upholding the honor of the flag that symbolises Kashmir's resistance against tyranny", he said.
They do not agree with the Chief Minister when he tried to justify LAHDC lapse by equating it to a municipality. "Yes, Srinagar Municipality has its own symbol but it does not take political decisions", they said.
The Srinagar and Jammu municipalities are even scared of poisoning the stray dogs. The Srinagar Municipality had procured poison worth Rs 15 lakhs a few years ago but it could not be administered to the canines for fear of the animal rights defenders.
