| Aijaz for people’s participation to protect, expand green cover | | | Jammu, Nov 29 Minister of State for Forests Mr. Aijaz Ahmad Khan has called for associating people particularly those inhabiting in the vicinity of Forests for protecting and promoting green cover in the state. Addressing a meeting of State Level Grazing Settlement Committee here today, Mr. Khan said that a comprehensive policy with balanced approach has to be worked out to ensure conservation of forests in a phased manner. It will also facilitate the livestock with grazing areas on which the livelihood of a large chunk of people depends. He said, Gujjars, Bakerwals and others who migrate to high land pastures in summer and to plain areas in winter alongwith their flocks need to be associated largely in conservation of forests, besides making available demarcated grazing corridors along the routes through which the flocks migrate, so that they do not feel any difficulty in grazing the livestock. The Minister asked the concerned authorities to formulate a project for construction of shelter sheds on already identified eight routes which are mostly used for migration of livestock from plains to high land pastures and vice-versa which he said will be submitted to the centre for funding to facilitate nomads at the earliest. Mr. Khan also stressed upon the Forest and Agro Forestry department to prepare another project for setting up of fodder banks in the state, wherever required, to ensure availability of fodder around the year in a time bound manner for speedy implementation. He also emphasized the need for having mobile Veterinary first aid centers to provide health cover to the migratory flocks enroute. The Minister also suggested for conducting a survey to ascertain the exact number of families alongwith the migratory livestock, so that they could be facilitated accordingly.
