Kulgam 'rape' allegations
7/27/2011 12:26:50 AM
EARLY TIMES Report
Jammu, July 26: Even as the protests over alleged rape incident in Kulgam which shattered peace in Valley, have relatively calmed down but the anger and resentment, particularly in the Gujjar community is brewing up , also over the aftermath of you tube controversy that erupted three days back. The leaders of prominent Gujjar organisations are demanding thorough probe into allged rape incident besides calling for end to 'ways' by authorities that unnecessarily puts the victim in any kind of embarrassing and awkward position.
The allegations of rape took the shape of an aggravated controversy soon after the video clip of this tribal woman of Manzgam village was released in You Tube in which Police is allegedly said to have taken her statement . though Police authorities are in complete denial of having released this video clip, this has angered many who term this as unethical, illegal and simply uncalled for. Some legal experts and senior police officers have even said that this has been done with a 'motive' to hamper the course of investigations.
While concerned quarters including Army against whom allegations are raised and the Police have started their job in finding out the 'truth', prominent Gujjar leaders are demanding proper and thourough probe in a time bound manner into the matter so that real truth comes out. Javed rahi a prominent leader of teh community and president of Tribal Research and Gujjar Foundation has demanded judicial enquiry into the allegations. " I also appeal to the people of the community across the state to maintain peace and calm and let the authorities probe in a fair manner", Rahi said adding that such incidents are shocking and condemnable for any community . Gujjars and tribal people are known for their nationalist characteristics and are certainly deeply hurt to hear about allegations this woman has made.
"Rape and atrocities of any kind come as rude shock for any and every civilised community........though such incidents should not be seen as the victim belonging to a particular community, there is reason why the community feels more resentment and anger at this incident...." said Shah Mohammad , president of J&K Gujjar United Front and member of J&K state Advisory Board for Development of Gujjars and Bakerwals. If the allegations are tru, its hould be condemned by one and all in severest terms ....but more than that law must take its own course.....rule of law must prevail and the government must ensure that truth comes out, he asserted. Shah Mohammad also said sicne the Gujjar community is nationalist community, it feels demoralised at what has been alleged by the woman.
"It is yet not clear completely as to what is the real identity of the woman.....but that is not the issue......the issue is that any woman belonging to any community if faced with such trauma is strongly condemnable....it is truly unfortunate that people living in far off areas are made to suffer like this....all that we can ask is thorough enquiry in afree and fair manner", said another Gujjar leader and Patron of J&K Gujjar united united Front, Anwar Choudhary.
Pertinent to mention here is that CPI (M) Politburo member and Member Parliament Brinda Karat, who was in valley few days back with a Parliamentary Delegation for Women Empowerment has demanded suspension of police officer responsible for uploading the video clip. She has also demanded an impartial and fair probe into the incident.
Karat, according to reports, has taken strong exception to the release of medical report and video clip by police. "The release of material is an act to influence the investigations and it is against the protocol within the country," she has been quoted as saying.
