Demand for setting up additional passenger reservation service counters in Jammu | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 27 (KIP): With annual increase in railway passengers from Jammu and Udhampur commuters besides political leaders have suggested to the Northern Railways to open more passenger reservation service counters (PRSC) at various focal points in Jammu and Udhampur. Vice-president of the state unit of the BJP, Chander Mohan Sharma said that there was need for opening additional PRSCs in Jammu and Udhampur. He said out of 80 lakh pilgrims who visit the holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi annually over 60 per cent of them travel by train from various areas in the country to Jammu and on their return they find it difficult to reserve their seats in the railway coaches because of insufficient number of PRSCs. Number of Vaishno Devi pilgrims interviewed and said that there are a number of ticket booking counters on the Jammu railway station but a number of them remain closed for most of the time. In certain cases counters remained unattended by the railway employees. They said that in order to ensure hassle free rail reservations the authorities should open more PRSCs in Jammu and adjoining areas. Others said that since Jammu city has turned into a base camp for the Amarnath pilgrims and several other local as well as foreign tourists, who visit Kashmir, the need for additional number of PRSCs is urgent. Traders and hoteliers in Jammu wanted the state authorities and the Northern Railways functionaries to cooperate in setting up new PRSCs after the Northern Railways announced that it had decided to improve basic amenities to passengers. They also wanted civic facilities at the Jammu Railway station to be upgraded along-with improving the car parking area so that passengers, especially old men and women have not to cover a long distance on foot to reach the platform.
