New measures a step towards Economic Free Zone | Mufti welcomes joint statement | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, July 27: Welcoming the outcome of the Indo Pak foreign Minister’s talks in New Delhi today Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said the measures announced are another step towards making the state an Economic Free Zone (EFC). In a statement issued here by the party, Mufti said the measures announced in the joint statement indicate a significant progress in carrying forward the peace process and building of trust between the two neighbors that is important for finding a lasting solution to Jammu and Kashmir. He said the vision of a tension free South Asia will receive a boost with the concrete measures announced especially with regard to the cross LOC travel and trade. Mufti said expanding the facility of LOC travel to citizens other than the divided families is of particular importance in lifting the siege around the state that had felt choked by an iron curtain around it after the events of 1947. However, he said more routes will soon have to be opened especially Kargil Skardu road that will connect Ladakh region also with people across the LOC. He said the decisions to relax the procedure regarding permit and travel documents under the new arrangement was expected to reduce hassles but stressed its follow up needed to be streamlined. PDP patron said expanding trade across LOC was a significant progress and it was heartening that the list of items was being reviewed which could add more substance to it and open immense possibilities of employment and prosperity in all regions. This he said was the beginning of an EFC for the state. Reiterating his suggestion to provide a banking back up to LOC trade he said it was inevitable and would happen sooner than latter so that currencies of both countries could be used. Mufti expressed the hope that the state government would do more to improve the infrastructure at trading points which has been an area of concern and had led the traders in Jammu and Srinagar to boycott trade for many weeks.
