EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 27: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is in deep trouble. Home Minister P Chidambaram, whose position Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithha describes as "untenable", is also in a soup. Jayalalithha has publicly censured Chidambaram and said he suffered a defeat at the hands of the AIADMK candidate in the 2008 Lok Sabha elections. She has, in addition, publicly stated that he manipulated victory through illegal methods three hours after he was declared defeated.
The BJP has upped its ante and unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign to ensure their exist. It has demanded resignation of Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram. The attitude of the Indian Left is no different. The factor that has inspired and motivated the otherwise directionless, confused and leaderless BJP is the statements the arrested A Raja, DMK leader, former Telecom Minister and accused in the 1,76,000 crore 2-G spectrum scam, made in the court yesterday and day before yesterday that whatever he did while distributing spectrum licenses he did it with the concurrence of the Prime Minister and the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram. The charges he levelled against the Prime Minister and Chidambaram are very serious and there are reasons to believe that they may be out sooner than later.
The immediate fallout of the statements made by A Raja has been the rise of a situation that has made the position of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, or for that matter the Congress-led UPA Government, quite untenable. The government is vulnerable and the arguments the likes HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Home Minister Chidambaram, Law Minister Salman Khurshid and other ministers like Ashwini Kumar Sharma have been advancing in favour of the weak, troubled, cornered and beleaguered Prime Minister and Home Minister are so weak that there is no taker for them. The Congress is on the defensive. The truth is that the government of Manmohan Singh appears to be on its way out.
The situation as it exists today in the country shows that there exists no government worth its name in New Delhi. Anarchy, confusion and an extreme form of uncertainty have all gripped the whole country. Administration is in a state of paralysis. The Manmohan Singh-led government is being contemptuously dismissed by everyone as the "most corrupt government India has ever since post independence." It is also being described as "anti-people", "anti-poor" and "pro-corporate." The Supreme Court of India has further added to the woes of the Congress and the Prime Minister and what the people term as his "corrupt and insensitive" government. It has become quite pro-active and it is because of its intervention that a number of influential MPs are in the high security Tihar Jail. In other words, the country is witnessing instability of worst form these days with Supreme Court calling all the shots and doing its level best to bring to justice the corrupt and those who have looted and fleeced the Indian exchequer.
The political instability at the centre has directly benefited Chief Minister Omar Abdullah whose government, too, has become quite unpopular over the period because of what the people call the "rise of a deadly and corrupt politician-bureaucrat-mafia nexus." The situation has climaxed to the point that there is widespread resentment, discontent and disaffection among all, barring those close to men-in-power and the all-powerful bureaucracy.
The employees are unhappy. They are on the warpath. They have threatened a full-scale agitation. People are unhappy because there is none in the government who appears to be willing to listen to their grievances and meet their demands, even petty and illusory. Students are unhappy. They are also on the warpath. They have not allowed most of the educational institutions in Jammu to function. They have been demanding the establishment of Central University. Their movement is now engulfing the whole of the province. The people of Jammu and Ladakh are extremely angry because the Omar Abdullah-led coalition government has been consistently widening the gulf between the state and New Delhi by arousing popular feelings in through his speeches and statements. The situation has also worsened to the extent that non-NC MPs, MLAs and MLCs have started boycotting the district development board meetings. They did it in Samba the other day and they did it Doda yesterday saying the NC-led government is not allocating adequate funds and that it is discriminatory.
Had there been political stability at the centre, New Delhi would have taken cognizance of what has been happening in this sensitive border and militant-infested state. Since the Union Government itself is in deep trouble, Omar Abdullah has been making optimum use of this political instability and doing whatever he wants to do. The fact of the matter is that the political instability in New Delhi and the muddled thinking of the BJP have turned out to a boon for the otherwise beleaguered Chief Minister. It is obvious that advantage Omar Abdullah and disadvantages the people of the state in particular and their counterparts in other parts of the country in general.
