Tarigami hails J&K specific CBMs | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 28: CPI (M) state secretary M Y Tarigami today hailed state centric confidence building measures announced by the Indo-Pak Foreign Ministers in the recently concluded meeting at New Delhi, saying that friendship between the two neighbouring nations was indispensable for perpetuation of peace and normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing a convention, organized by All India Apple Growers Association at Baramulla, he urged the Indo- Pak leadership to sort out banking and communication issues to make trade and travel across LOC more pragmatic and result oriented. “The barter system presently in vogue is impeding smooth and hassle free trade between the traders across the divide”, he added. The legislator sought high level inquiry to ascertain utilization of funds under Horticulture Technology Mission in the State. He said hundreds of crores of rupees that the State receives under the programme have not shown any worthwhile progress as the growers continue to use traditional approaches in the production activities. Tarigami urged the government to facilitate the research for production of quality apples in the state. He said Agriculture University should be roped in to study the reasons as to why Kashmiri apples are not competing in international markets despite being produced in ideal agro-climatic conditions. He called for keeping available latest agricultural and horticultural technology to the farmers and orchardists. He said free of cost technological inputs will help the growers to produce the best quality fruits. The legislator rued absence of cold storage facilities for the fruit growers, saying lack of this vital facility constitutes a big hurdle in forging market linkages necessary to earn round the year foreign exchange. Stating that fruit industry could be an effective alternative to take on the problem of unemployment, he said the government has not given adequate attention towards this vital issue. General Secretary, All India Apple Growers Association Haji Abdul Ahad, President J&K Apple Growers Association Mohd Yousuf Dar, General Secretary, J & K Kissan Tehrik Gh Nabi Malik and advocate Irfan Hafiz Lone also addressed the convention and highlighted the difficulties of the fruit growers and farmers in the face of government negligence.
