Kashmir is not a stone pelting problem: Mufti ‘Resolution clearly in sight' | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, July 28: Expressing confidence that an honourable and dignified solution to the problem of J&K is insight, Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed today said the confidence building measures announced by foreign ministers of India and Pakistan were ‘not a mere step but a stride’. He was addressing a meeting of party leaders, legislators and prominent workers here today to mark the foundation day of PDP. It was on this day in 1999 that the Mufti had launched the regional party to channelize the aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. Mufti said though there was obvious progress on the external front it was unfortunate that for some quarters Kashmir was only a local law and order problem of stone pelting or crowd control. He was referring to the statement of the union Home Minister P Chidambaram the other day congratulating the state government ‘for controlling stone pelting.’ “I did not like the remark”, Mufti asserted. Maintaining that Kashmir is a political problem and needs a resolution of all its dimensions and it is unfortunate that the Home Minister did not refer to the governance crisis in the state or the suppression that is being practiced by the government here. Expressing satisfaction that there is no trouble on streets, Mufti said the price that is being paid by Kashmiris for this calm is unacceptable. Scores of senior and aged politicians and hundreds of young man have been imprisoned. Mufti said the siege around the state was bound to go as is evident from developments after 2002. He said the principals of economic union rest on free trade and travel across borders. “The principal of free travel across LOC only on permits and not passport and visa and tax free border trade concede both these requirements” he said pointing out though this is one country it has accepted to have two systems. He said he clearly sees light at the end of the tunnel and an end to miseries of our people. “Kashmir solution looks clearly in sight” Mufti stressed. While this single party authoritarianism lasted for decades which added to the darkness of the scenario; it finally received the first serious challenge in 1999 with the foundation of PDP. Describing this as a turning point in the democratic history of the state Mufti said, “PDP changed rules of the game.”
