Omar for focused attention on sports

SRINAGAR, Jul 28: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today highlighted need of nurturing sports culture in the state and added that 20 years of disturbance greatly affected the growth and development of games in the State.
“We have now focused on building necessary infrastructure for different sports in the State along with organizing State and National events to encourage games”, he said. Chief Minister was speaking on the sidelines of the final match of JKCA Golden Jubilee T20 Tournament at Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium here.
Omar Abdullah was the chief guest on the occasion and players of two teams participating in the final were introduced to him before the start of the match. He also witnessed the proceedings of the final for some time. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah who is also President Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, Minister for Rural Development, Ali Mohammad Sagar, Advisor to the Chief Minister, Mubarak Gul, Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani and Members of the Cricket Association were present on the occasion.
The Chief Minister said that Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium has been renovated and upgraded and its further development is under execution. “We are building Cricket Academy Complex near the stadium”, he said adding that after a period of over 20 years the indoor stadium complex in Srinagar was restored to games last month and All India Table Tennis Championship was recently held there.
In JKCA Golden Jubilee T20 Knockout-cum-League Tournament as many as 64 teams participated. The four quarter finals were played at Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium and Kashmir University ground on Round Robin League basis. The teams that participated in the quarter finals were KGK Reds, UCC Reds, ACC Reds, FCC Reds from Kashmir province and NCC, RCC, KCC and JCC from Jammu province.
Semi-finals were played between UCC Reds and KGK Reds in Kashmir and between NCC and KCC in Jammu. The KCC from Jammu and KGK Reds from Srinagar qualified for the final match which was played today.
