CM praises public schools for doing wonders! | Forgetting plight of children in govt schools | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 28: For the public school educated Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah to attend the platinum jubilee celebrations of a high profile public school can at best be called home coming. The public school educated Chief Minister was naturally more comfortable among the staff and children of the public school in Srinagar as they spoke in the language the chief minister understands the best---English. Naturally, since it was not a government run school, the Chief Minister could safely talk about the all round development of the students while they attain academic excellence. Without doubt, the chief minister could not have spoken of an all round development for students in a government run school where there are no playfields for children not to speak of auditoria, gymnasiums and other essential facilities without which there can be no all round development. Even most of the government run schools do not have adequate accommodation, libraries and laboratories for the students to compete on a level playfield with those fortunate ones whose parents can afford the high cost public school education for them. . "They should be proved to compete at the national and international level with confidence and competence", he said adding that after completing education they have to step in a wider world to make a dent. This statement from none less than the Chief Minister was the biggest irony for the millions of students in the state who have no option other than pursue their studies in the government run schools. The Chief Minister also spoke of education as one of the important sectors in the policy planning and that this sector is receiving up to the mark attention for balanced growth and improvement. What does the honourable Chief Minister mean by "up to the mark attention for balanced growth and improvement?" Is attending classes in schools whose roofs leak during the rains up to the mark attention? Or is being forced to attend tuitions in the mornings and the evenings at the coaching classes of the same teachers who are paid for teaching the students in the government schools, but never discharge their duties, a case of balanced growth and improvement? No wonder that a galaxy of state ministers, senior officials, businessmen and other influential people formed the audience of the Chief Minister during the function. Would the Chief Minister ponder for a moment and then say honestly whether he as the head of the state should attend such colourful functions when his government run schools are showing such poor results not because the students there are not hardworking and intelligent, but simply because they are underprivileged and ignored as compared to the fortunate ones who entertained and amused the audience during the platinum jubilee functions the other day.
