| J&K being ignored for oil, gas exploration | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 29 (KIP): Both the Government of India and the state Government seem to play a mute policy on oil and gas exploration work in Jammu and Kashmir. Experts say that the oil and gas exploration exercise had been initiated by the ONGC in Jammu and Kashmir in mid 60's but had started abandoning the programme from mid 80's for reasons known to the ONGC and the Government of India.
According to the experts, the preliminary gas and oil exploration work in various areas of the state had yielded neither any gas nor any oil but the exercise was suspended without bringing various karewas and mountain ranges under the exploration programme.
The experts said that survey carried out by geologists had indicated that Kashmir Karewas, Zanskar and some Himalayan foothill areas could yield gas and oil. They said that at one stage the Government of India had entered into an agreement with a Hungarian exploration company for oil and gas exploration in Jammu and Kashmir, including Karewas in the valley.
This Hungarian company has been responsible for discovering oil and gas in Pakistan which has geological conditions similar to Jammu and Kashmir.
Even the ONGC sees Jammu and Kashmir three basins, Kashmir Karewas, Spiti-Zanskar belt and Himalayan foothills, with significant oil and gas potential. But so far nothing concrete has been done to find out the gas and oil reserves.
Official sources said that in mid-80's exploration programme in Jammu and Kashmir was abandoned after influential politicians forced the ONGC to shift their rigs to Bihar. The sources held the successive state Governments responsible for not mounting pressure on the Government of India to motivate the ONGC for restarting exploration work for oil and gas in Jammu and Kashmir.
They have suggested to the state Government to take up the issue of delay in starting oil and gas exploration work in Zanskar and Kashmir karewas besides the Himalayan foothills.
