Authorities tighten security around Assembly

Srinagar, July 30 : After imposing prohibitory orders in the
five police station areas of the city in view of the assembly
session, sharp shooters have taken position in and around the
Legislature complex near here on the bank of river Jhehlum.
Apprehending troulbe the District Magistrate, (Srinagar) ordered
prohibiting the assembling of general public within the jurisdiction
of police station Batamaloo, Shaeedgunj, Maisuma, Kohiti Bagh and
Ram Munishi Bagh till Legislative Assembly and council summer session
is over..
This order issued by the Magistrate by virtue of powers vested in
him under section 144 CrPC, has been necessitated for smooth
functioning of ongoing Assembly session and to avoid threats to
general law and order, an official spokesman said adding this order
shall come in force with immediate effect.
The authorities have already imposed a total ban on plying of
vehicles from Jehangir chowk to Badshah Chowk road.
A six-day session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly
began here on Friday under unprecedented security arrangements with
sharp shooters deployed on all high rise buildings in and around the
legislative complex. There was no sitting yesterday because of
President's visit and the house will meet on Monday.
The sharp shooters with automatic weapons were guarding the
deserted streets from high rise buildings with the help of
binoculars on Moulana Azad Road, Shergrahi, Badshah Chowk, Lal Chowk
and Jehangir Chowk.
The traffic police have already directed the people to take
alternative route during the assembly session for reaching their
destinations as the road from Jehangir Chowk to Badshah chowk will
remain closed.
Security forces wearing bullet proof jackets, armed with
automatic weapons have been deployed in the area to thwart any
militant attempt during the session.
Security forces were also seen patrolling in water boats in river
Jhelum.
