Dharna in Delhi for Central University, authorities unmoved | Dogras On Warpath | | Neha Jammu, July 30: While the Jammu-based indifferent and meek Congress and BJP leadership continues to maintain a very long distance from those spearheading the movement for the early establishment of Central University in Jammu and appointment of its first Vice-Chancellor and while the Jammu-based NC and PDP leaders, along with their Kashmiri masters, continue to demand autonomy and self-rule for the state, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), which is an established political party, notwithstanding the fact that it has only four legislators (3 MLAs and 1 MLC), has been putting in all to identify itself with the Duggar Pradesh and those struggling for achieving twin goals - establishment of university and appointment of Vice-Chancellor and slowly but surely capturing the political space of the two national parties. A number of factors are helping the JKNPP to consolidate and expand its constituency, particularly in Duggar Pradesh. For example, since April this year, the JKNPP leadership has been consistently focusing on Dogra-centric genuine issues. One of the issues that it has been taking up with single-minded determination is the issue of Jammu Central University. Its Young Panthers are in the forefront and its student wing is also doing all that it could to pressuring the authorities to concede this demand. In the process, they have faced lathi blows. A number of Young Panthers were also arrested a few days ago. They have, like the Jammu Central University Morcha, the Jammu State Morcha, the Jammu Province People's Forum and several other organizations, succeeded in mobilizing public opinion. Not only this, they and other student organizations have been successful in making students, including girl students, boycott their classes and hold demonstrations peacefully. Not content with what the Young Panthers and its student wing have done so far in this direction, the JKNPP top leadership took a great step yesterday when the JKNPP chairman Bhim Singh and all the three MLAs - Harshdev Singh, Balwant Singh Mankotia and Yashpal Kundal -- along with nearly one hundred of other Panthers, sat at dharna at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, for the promotion of the cause - establishment of Jammu Central University and appointment of Vice-Chancellor. They were arrested by the Parliament Street police and kept in custody for a few hours. Holding of dharna in New Delhi on the issue of Central University was an important development. Even far more important development was the declaration that the Dogras would not remain dormant and devoid of any political activity any longer; that they would not allow New Delhi and the Kashmiri leadership to perpetrate more injustices on Duggar Pradesh and that they would organize bandh in Jammu on August 17 in the event of the authorities not conceding the demands of the agitating student community. The terminology and the language they JKNPP leaders used in New Delhi while denouncing the authorities and the Congress, the BJP and the NC suggested that they may give a radical orientation to the ongoing movement to achieve the twin objectives and create an environment that would force the authorities to reorganize the state and empower Jammu to have a separate assembly and a separate chief minister. The way the JKNPP leadership has been conducting itself since April this year has started attracting the people's attention. And, it is natural. For, the Dogras have of late started seeing in the JKNPP their savior. However, to say all this is not to convey an impression that the JKNPP has won over everyone in Duggar Pradesh. It is not the case. It has to intensify its activities and put in more hard work if it is to neutralize fully the influence of the Congress and the BJP. It has to act the manner Mamta Bannerjee acted and captured West Bengal overthrowing over 3-decade-long Left rule and it has to ape Telangana. Once it does that, neither the Congress nor the BJP would be able to face the JKNPP's political onslaught. Jammu Central University is one issue and the JKNPP leadership has been able to handle this issue quite effectively. But the problem facing Duggar Pradesh is far more serious. Its very identity and personality is under grave threat. The JKNPP leadership would do well to take note of this threat and focus its attention on the larger issue. |
