Contractual lecturers’ indefinite hunger strike begins
7/30/2011 11:29:15 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, July 30 (KNS): The college contractual lecturers today began indefinite hunger strike to press for their demands, even as halt to higher education in colleges across Kashmir saw no respite for 26th day.
Early in the morning, around 50 members of JK college contractual teachers association (JKCCTA), including many females, from various colleges began their protest at Press Enclave here. Throughout the hot July day they remained clustered in tents without food or water. The banners and placards hanging on all sides reiterated their demands; pleaded; sought end to the discrimination.
“We will sit here till our demands are fulfilled,” the president JKCCTA, Dr Mohammed Maqbool, said. “We will stay in these tents round the clock till justice is done with us. Our demands are genuine.”
While the government watches as mute spectator, the upcoming holy Ramadhan seems the only challenge the hunger strike may have to over come.
“We will not end the strike come what may,” asserts Dr Maqbool.
“If government is seeing Ramadhan as an escape route, we must make it clear that the strike will go on. We will not eat Sehri, hence we will not fast. The protest will continue,” he told KNS.
JKCCTA is an umbrella body of around 650 contractual lecturers who have been on strike since July 27. They demand change in the nomenclature; monthly wages equivalent to the basic salary of the post they are holding; one time exemption in NET/SET; and end to the new norm of six classes per day.
The strike, that is about to complete one month, has brought education in colleges to a grinding halt.
The government, however, has been unconcerned about the issue, forcing JKCCTA to go for the hunger strike.
“Government was showing no interest in our cause. The effect on education seemed to make no impact, so we chose hunger strike as an alternative way to press for our demands,” said the JKCCTA president. (KNS)
