People’s movement for Degree College at Majalta gears up | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Manwal, July 31: A meeting of all political parties, NGOs, pressure groups and people hailing from a wide cross-section of fields was held today at Devi Bani, Manwal, under the chairmanship of R. S. Pathania, president, All Parties Tehsil Development Committee whileas Om Parkash, vice president, Kusum Jasrotia, joint secretary,
Shankar Dass office secretary, Hem Raj Gupta assisting advisor, Haji Mohd Din, coordinator/secretary, S.S Sumbria president DAHWA, Kuldip Singh sarpanch, Mohan Lal Sharma sarpanch, Bodh Raj sarpanch, Mohd. Salim sarpanch, Dewan Singh sarpanch, Sharan Singh sarpanch, Rameshwar Sharma, Faleil Singh, Mulkh Raj, Charan Dass and other executive members of the all-party committee remained present and shared their opinions.
While addressing people having assembled over there, Pathania stressed for a people’s movement for a Degree College at Majalta. He charged that the state government has sanctioned Degree Colleges at less deserving locations while leaving more deserving ones.
Right from Udhampur to Billawar on Dhar road and then upto Samba, there in no Degree College in this 150 km-odd road distance. Also as per UGC norms each Tehsil has to get a Degree College whereas the newly-opened Majalta Tehsil has no Degree College. Unless a Degree College is opened in Majalta, government is not justified in opening second/third Degree Colleges in other tehsils, that even on purely political considerations in abject violation of set norms and standards.
Worse more, district Udhampur had long back been enlisted as an ‘educationally backward district’ and no College has been opened in this district under the centrally-sponsored scheme, ‘Colleges For Educationally Backward Areas’. The speakers resolved to call upon the Governor, Chief Minister, and Higher Education minister, and further lobby for a Degree College at Majalta.
And in case there is positive response from the government’s side, the all-party conglomerate shall spark off a people’s movement against the government. They further made preparations for a students’ rally and a massive signature campaign in order to further create pressure for the genuine demand of 50, 000 people living over here.
Others who remained present included Bimla Thakur, Prem Singh, Faiz Hussain, Mohd. Azim, Romesh Kumar, Jagan Nath, Madan Singh, Rattan Chand, Suresh Kumar, Gopal Singh, Tara Chand, Mulkh Raj, Anchel Singh, Devi Das, Rattan Singh, Rinku Singh and others
