Adhoc lecturers’ hunger strike enters Day 2 | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 31 (KNS): The college contractual lecturers’ hunger strike today entered the second day even as their tussle with the state government over various demand is yet to find any breakthrough. Under the banner of J&K College Contractual Teachers Association (JKCCTA), around 50 representatives of the 650 contractual lecturers working in colleges across Kashmir have been on fast unto death since yesterday morning in the make shift tents set up at press enclave here. Throughout the day, the strike went on uninterrupted after they spent the night in the tents itself. The protesters, however, are determined to continue the agitation until their demands are fulfilled. The JKCCTA—umbrella body of contractual lecturers—President Dr Mohammad Maqbool said: “This is the way we have chosen to press on our demands. And, we will not give up this agitation till our goal is fulfilled.” The contractual lecturers have been on strike since July 27. They demand change in the nomenclature; monthly wages equivalent to the basic salary of the post they are holding; one time exemption in NET/SET; and end to the new norm of six classes per day. The strike, that is about to complete one month, has brought higher education to a grinding halt. The attendance of students has gone down considerably since the permanent faculty has miserably failed to fill the gap created by the absence of contractual staff. While an estimated 1, 60, 000 classes have suffered since the day one of the strike, the state government has been shown a cold shoulder to the problem. The minister as well as the officials has been promising action, but nothing has been done on the ground so far.
