Fruit growers demand processing and canning units in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 31: Orchardists and those connected with the horticulture sector have suggested to the Government to promote market cover within and outside Jammu and Kashmir so that fruit growers were not compelled to convert their orchards either for raising housing colonies or for growing different cash crops.
While listing various problems being faced by the fruit growers they reminded the Government that lack of storage facilities was one of the basic shortcomings.
Appreciating Government efforts fruit growers said that setting up storage facilities and suitable markets at Nowpora in Sopore,Parimpora in Srinagar and Narwal in Jammu they said it was not enough in the light of rapid increase in fruit production.
Another problem fruit growers face is lack of processing and value addition units.
A number of fruit growers said that hedge post and preharvest losses could be checked if the Government sets up a number of processing plants besides fruit juice making units.
Transport difficulties coupled with inadequate cold chain mechanization too would contribute to losses to the fruit growers. Heavy post-harvest losses and low promotional efforts for market led extension services were other problems before the orchardists.
Official sources said that the Government had taken in hand several measures for improving cold storage facilities in fruit growing areas within the state and at different stations including Jammu and Delhi. The Government has succeeded in arranging export of molest perishable fruit including cherry by the Indian Airlines on a priority basis.
Efforts are being made to eliminate middlemen in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata so that the fruit growers from Jammu and Kashmir were able to finalize the deal with the buyers.
Sources said that since LOC trade was being expanded more fruit items were to be included in the list of exports to areas across the LOC on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakot routes. In addition to this enterpreneurs would be provided with Government incentive and other assistance for setting up fruit processing and juice making units in Jammu and Kashmir.
