Jammu has to struggle even for petty things, What an irony!
Central University

JAMMU, July 31: Students have been boycotting classes since days and urging the authorities to make the Central University functional and appoint its Vice-Chancellor, preferably a local academician of admitted excellence, but with no result. The authorities continue to maintain indifferent attitude towards the very genuine demands for which they have been on the roads. Convinced that the authorities would not concede their demands so easily, the aggrieved students started hunger strike on July 25 and the strike continues unabated but without evoking any positive response.
The same day, the Jammu Province People's Forum - a conglomerate of nearly two dozen associations, organizations and sabha and societies, also started hunger strike and it continues unabated, but without evoking any favourable response from the concerned authorities. On July 29, the Panthers Party organized dharna at New Delhi for attracting the attention of the authorities towards what had been happening in Jammu and Jammu-based educational institutions as well as in other educational institutions of the province, but with no result. So much so that even its unequivocal threat that the people of Jammu would observe bandh on August 17 in the event of the authorities not conceding the students' demands has failed to move the authorities.
The result of the indifferent attitude of the authorities to the students' demands has been that those who held themselves aloof from the agitating student community and others involved in the movement till the other day have started taking the plunge and joining the movement to identify themselves with the struggling Dogras and the Dogra student community. Take, for example, the BJP, the Bar Association Jammu (BAJ) and the ABVP. The BJP, which maintained complete silence for days together for reasons best known to it, organized an impressive protest demonstration yesterday for the cause the student community holds very dear. Nearly 400 hundred BJP activists took part in the protest demonstration. There was also a clash between them and the police. The BAJ, premier association of the legal fraternity, also jumped into the arena in a big way and it also happened yesterday. The lawyers struck work for full day, threatened a full-scale agitation on the issue and identified themselves with the Jammu cause, thus giving a further fillip to the ongoing movement.
Earlier, the Jammu Central University Morcha (JCUM), a conglomerate of several small political and social groups, plus the Jammu Joint Student Federation, had worked very hard to mobilize the public opinion on the issue and inform the public that they would have to launch a relentless struggle to achieve the objective. It was the JCUM that had induced, inspired and motivated the people of Jammu to observe bandh on May 1, 2010. The people responded to the call and Jammu witnessed an impressive bandh. The morcha leadership also went all the way from Jammu to New Delhi to meet the concerned authorities to convince them of the need of meeting their legitimate demands.
The fact of the matter is that everyone in Duggar Pradesh, barring those belonging to the Congress, the NC and similar other Kashmir-centric and anti-Dogra organizations, has joined the movement one-way or the other. It would be only appropriate to say that it has become a mass movement. If this trend continues for some more time, the movement would surely assume alarming proportions and if at all it happens, the results would be disastrous both for the Congress and the NC and those who ignore their constituencies in Jammu province and side with the Kashmiri leadership for the sake of personal power and profit at the cost of Jammu.
There is no doubt whatever that the Dogras would succeed in forcing the otherwise adamant and Kashmir-centric authorities to see reason and concede their demands. This is not the issue. It is just a matter of few days. The issue is: They do not get anything without struggle. The situation has now climaxed to the point that Dogras have to struggle and make sacrifices even for obtaining something that was sanctioned long back after the Dogras struggled for months for the same. Why? Why should this happen? This would go on till the time the Dogras do not obtain a dispensation independent of Kashmir. The suffering Dogras have realized it and this became quite clear from certain recent reports that moves are afoot to establish a coordination committee comprising various Jammu-centric organizations for the purpose of giving a concrete shape to a well-conceived plan that seeks reorganization of the state and separate assembly and separate chief minister for Duggar pradesh. The Panthers Party is, according to reports, taking the lead.
