Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 31: Even as the intermittent strikes by state government employees in support of their demands in recent past have not created much pressure on the NC led ruling alliance in J&K but the manner various unions are bracing up for scheduled two day strike from August 5, the government it appears is in for major trouble. Almost all the unions are busy in a meaningful manner in garnering and mobilising support at the district and tehsil levels across the state to make it a 'big show down' against the government.
Notwithstanding the fact that some organisations and unions of the state employees have been going in different directions instead of following the strike in a united manner, this may not be the situation this time when JCC, the banner under which all unions come, has given renewed call for strike this week. JCC has also been trying to bring all the unions under one fold and platform at least for the two main demands of release of 6th pay commission arrears and enhancement of retirement age from present 58 to 60 years. Sources said the JCC leaders have been able to convince those following different paths that disunity and divisions have caused more harm than any good. It was high time to build pressure on the government in a united manner for common cause on these two fronts, they have been conveyed, sources said.
"The message it appears has gone well in right quarters...........some of the leaders who would antagonise on issues even on negotiating table have started garnering support in right earnest", said a leader wishing not to be named. Almost a week ahead, the unions have been camping at district and tehsil level and mobilising support of employees for ensuring huge participation of employees in the two day strike beginning from August 5. The decision of the employees to fight it 'unitedly' this time has caused 'worries' in government corridors who have otherwise been taking the strike not in a serious manner in recent past, said the sources. Infact, the leaders who are in the forefront, have realised that their divisions and disunity has suited the government which is not considering their demands that have been agreed to two years back.
"Ther have been some important meetings with key leaders of various organisations and JCC leaders in which all these matters were taken up in threadbare manner......there were some allegations and some even came up with proof substantiating this that in the back channel ways certain sections in the government have been further trying to widen the wedges and differences between employees' unions", said a leader from Jammu. But such tactics won't work now......he said adding that in order to build pressure on the government unity is must.
