PDP carries its bulldozer into NC's bastion | Has NC the wisdom to see chinks in its armour? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 31: The show of strength in Srinagar city by the PDP has not only proved that the main opposition in the state has made inroads in state's politically sensitive summer capital, but it has also proved that the ruling NC is fast losing ground under its feet. Srinagar city is represented in the 87-member legislative assembly by eight MLAs and all of them belong to the ruling NC. The PDP could not get a foothold in Srinagar during the 2008 assembly elections. The NC has traditionally been a stronghold of the NC and it was here in this city that the NC founder, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was born and his political career reached its zenith. NC and Srinagar had become synonymous; you could not speak of one and ignore the other. Mufti Mohammad Syed is out to disprove that part of Srinagar's political history. Who could imagine the PDP could successfully organize a very impressive public rally in Srinagar city? Sarpanches and Panches of the PDP came from different parts of the Valley to converge on the TRC grounds in Srinagar. Discipline, confidence and commitment to the party's leadership could be seen written in bold letters on the faces of the PDP workers. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was right when he said let us not talk about the numbers. Yes, it did not matter whether the PDP had been successful in bringing together 8000 Panchayat election winners of its party to the TRC grounds or whether all the people who attended the PDP rally were just party activists. The fact to be pondered upon is that the PDP leaders including Mufti Syed, his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, senior leaders Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, Molvi Ifftekhar Hussain Ansari, Dilawar Mir and others gathered with their supporters in Srinagar city to deliver a strong message for the NC----the Lion was not safe even in its own den. It is an eye opener for all those political analysts (read sycophants) who had been telling the NC leadership that Srinagar was an impregnable fortress and the PDP could never dare look at it. To prove those political analysts wrong, the PDP marched with its supporters right into the Lion's den and challenged him there. The problem for the NC is that the days of the Lion are already over. There is no leader in the ruling party who can claim to ride on the wavelengths of the people's minds. There is no leader in the NC who can claim to have the strength to reverse the political trend in Srinagar and unfortunately there is no leader in the NC who can claim to even understand the changing mood of the people. Mufti Mohammad Syed is rightly known as the most clever politician in the mainstream political camp. He has the political acumen to read the minds of the people. He might not be as articulate, as trendy and as impressive looking as his arch rivals in the NC. But, the PDP patron has the alacrity of a fox. He can foresee the future and he can also read the political temperature. Ten thousand people came from different parts of the Valley and from different areas of Srinagar city to express solidarity with the PDP. It was also a clear exhibition of defiance against the ruling party. It was also a show of anger against the NC. The NC must not try to push the dust under the carpet. It would be too late tomorrow if the NC tries to give self-deceiving justifications for the PDP's power to garner support in Srinagar city today. Nobody ever comes from a far off land to cook his food in your hearth. If he has entered your home, he has the strength and the support to do so. Instead of blaming him, the NC must try to introspect. The PDP has just started the act of demolition for the NC. The demolition might be slow, unnoticed, but it has already started. Some of the mighty walls of the NC's fortress have started showing cracks. Do the NC leaders have the wisdom to see those cracks? |
