Militancy infested Kupwara to woo tourists in future | Kupwara, North Kashmir, | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Aug 1: In yester years Kupwara was in news mainly for the militants who operated from here. However, in the coming days Kupwara will be known for its beauty. The Jammu Kashmir government has decided to explore and promote new tourist destinations in the state, some of which fall in Kupwara district. The authorities constituted the Lolab-Bangus and Drangyari Development Authority(LBDDA) which has recently organised a tour for travel agents, hoteliers and media persons to have an on the-spot view of the new tourist destinations.
Talking to visiting reporters Chief Executive Officer, of LBDDA Mohammad Yassin said the authority has identified many new tourist destinations, including Bangus Valley, Drangyari and Sat Barryn and other scenic spots of Lolab valley which comprises of various beautiful pastures, covered by lush green forests, snow covered peaks.
These new tourist spots will not only provide a peaceful atmosphere in this fast growing life, but also boost the economic conditions of the locals of the concerned areas and also generate new employment opportunities for local youths by exploring these destinations.
The Lolab Valley is traversed by a considerable stream known as LalKul (LAHWAL) which is fed by numerous tributaries flowing from surrounding hills, which are clothed by dense Deodar forests.
There are eleven ponds in the Valley having an average depth of seven to 15 feet. Varnow village in Lolab valley has historical importance, being the birth place of Allama Anwar Shah Kashmiri.
The Valley is also known for the SAT Barren and a cave (Tramkhand) in the Jungles of Madmadav. It is a unique place of ancient architecture, situated on the outskirts of Madmadav village in Kalaroos area 19 km from Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), Kupwara Sattbarran can be reached by road up to kalaroos and three km thereafter on foot. Adjacent to Sattbarran there is a centuries old cave which locals believe is connecting link to central Asian states.
Bangus Valley lies at an altitude of around 10,000 feet from the sea-level, occupying an estimated area of 300 sq km. The principal valley locally known as "Bodh Bangus" and "Lokut Bangus" consists of a linear elliptical bowl aligned along the east west axis.
Both the Valleys comprise level green meadows surrounded by low-lying mountains covered with dense pine forests.
