UEARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, July 31:

This Year Kashmir valley witnessed heavy rush of tourists and pilgrims of the holy Amarnath cave shrine.
A large number of tourists including 6 lakh Amaranth yatris have somewhat put the tourism industry of the state on track which otherwise was experiencing a slump due to the two decade long militancy.
The tourism in Jammu and Kashmir is one of the important components of state’s economy, however, the state government, it seems, is not very keen to tap the full potential of the industry as the authorities have failed to groom those areas which could generate not only revenue but employment for several jobless youth.
Besides, the picturesque locations in Kashmir valley there are certain others parts that are also scenic and can be used to grow the tourism industry which can be useful for the economic growth of the state.
However, the state government is not giving much importance to these areas.
The virgin beauty of spots like Sinthan Daksum and Kokernag is breathtaking but they are yet to be placed on the tourism map.
It has been seen from the past that prior to the 1990s Kokernag, the heart of river Brengi of the valley, famous for fresh water springs used to attract large number of tourist every year but of late the uncaring approach of the government has turned this scenic spot into a forgotten place.
The water of these springs was in the purest form and there was a proposal to export the water of the springs in the bottles to other parts of the country. When asked to a local he stated that they are against of construction of concrete structure but they feel the need to develop this place as an eco friendly tourism destination to regain its glory as it has chain of tourist spots from Achabal to Daksum to Sinthan top. He also said that the wildlife sanctuary and fish farm in Kokernag should be properly maintained.
Daksum situated on the way to Kishtwar is located at 2,438 meter along the river Brengi can be an attractive tourist spot as it has wildlife sanctuary, sheep farms and dense forest but unfortunately it lacks any proper infrastructure.
The rent houses and tourist bungalow is also in distress condition. The place is known for plenty of camping spots and from Daksum the trail rises fairly steeply to the Sinthan pass located at the height of 3,748 meter.
The locals alleged that the projects undertaken by the Kokarnag Development Authority (KDA) includes the development of public parks at Dandipora, Club park and hill view park to facilitate the tourism is going on a snail’s pace.
They also complained the delay in the execution of up gradation projects of Kokernag- Sinthan- Kishtwar route was preventing the people of both sides from accruing the economic benefits and also the development of these areas as tourist spots is getting a severe beating. The road connectivity for the Warwan, Marwah and Dachan is still a dream which was approved more than four decades back. If these stretches will be fully macadamized and made fully operational it besides mitigating the sufferings of far off places of Kishtwar including Warwan, Marwah and Dachan will boost the tourism. Efforts should also be made to attract tourists visiting Kashmir valley to take the return route through Kokernag for a visit to Warwan and Marwah, the beautiful valleys in Kishtwar besides some other scenic spots like Inshan top, Dachan, Aalwi Maidan and Fumbar nallah famous for trout fishes.
