Central university agitation intensifies, call for Jammu Bandh on Aug 17 | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 2: Protests to demand functioning of proposed Central University of Jammu continued today in the region with a group calling for a Bandh on August 17. "We call for Jammu Bandh on August 17 in protest against failure of state government to make CUJ functional by appointing Vice-Chancellor immediately," said Hindu Shiv Sena chairman Vipin Hindu while addressing a press conference here today. He appealed to the people to take part in the Bandh so that a message is given to government that Jammu region cannot remain mute spectator to discrimination on the issue. "All 15 universities which were announced alongwith CUJ, including Central University in Kashmir, have started functioning in past two years," he said. Continuing its agitation, National Panthers Students Union activists clashed with police at Jammu University after holding protest. Police prevented students to hold demos at campus resulting in clashes. Students of GGM Science College, MAM College, Jammu University and some schools boycotted classes and held protest demonstrations in support of the demand for CUJ. All Jammu and Kashmir Sikh Intellectual Circle (SIC) also demanded appointment of V-C to make CUJ functional at the earliest. Meanwhile, the hunger-strike of Jammu Province People’s Forum (JPPF) activists for the CUJ entered the ninth day today. Chairman of JPPF Thakur Pavittar Singh while speaking on the occasion warned state and central government against playing with the future of the students who are future of Jammu. He demanded immediate start of academic session and asserted that anger of Jammu people is assuming shape of volcano which will explode anytime. Singh informed that he received telephonic message from Member Parliament Madan Lal who informed him that he had a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and another with HRD minister Kapil Sibal. President of Muslim Federation Jammu Abdul Majid admitted that the anger and anxiety of Jammu students is increasing. Another Leader of JPPF Sardar Gajan Singh Khajuria warned that in case of delay, things are likely to worsen. Rajiv Mahajan, State President Shri Ram Sena warned the state government not to be hostile with agitating student community who are demanding their right for making CU functional. Forum members who sat on hunger strike today included Ved.Parkash Sharma,Varinder Mangotra, Sat Pal Sharma, Shanti Saroop Baru, Guru Dutt Khajuria, Prof. Hari Om, H.C Jalmaria Adv. Kamal Singh Jamwal, Udey Chand, Ch. Ghulam Rasool, Gajan Singh Khajuria, Ajay Charangoo, Satish Sher, S.K Kichloo and Ram Salathia. Students of GDC Ploura and SPMR College of commerce boycotted their classes under the leadership of Lovekesh Gondhi, Rahul Sharma and mukesh Bakshi. Both the gatherings were addressed by Partap Singh Jamwal (Provincial President NPSU). Students of GDC Ramnagar also boycotted their classes and held protest against the state government for delay in making CU functional. t. on the occasion Mr. Pawan Dev Singh said that the conversation between CM and HRD ministry about CUJ would be taken seriously and fast steps wuld be ta In GDC Udhampur students also continued their protest against govt. and held a strong demonstration. Addressing the students NPSU leaders said that the issue of delay in making CUJ functional is actually discrimination with Jammu province and appealed the students community to get united for the cause of establishment of CUJ. Meanwhile, the fourth phase of ongoing agitation for CUJ of indefinite relay Hunger Strike at Shaheedi Sthal, GGM Sc. College Jammu today entered 9th day. Mohit Sharma, Rahil Sahrma, Rakesh Khajuria and Vikram Partap Singh sat on fast. They are likely to be replaced by another four activists of NPSU and YP tomorrow at 11 a.m.
