Employees appear determined to fight for their rights | Repression And Resistance | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 2: Things in Jammu and Kashmir are heading towards a full-scale confrontation between the determined employees and what the aggrieved employees term as "arrogant, unaccommodating and insensitive state government." The state would surely witness a massive two-day-long strike on August 5 and 6 in the event of the authorities in the state not conceding the genuine demands of the employees in the state, nearly 4.5 lakh. The employees and their family members constitute nearly 20 per cent of the state's population and it is not difficult to understand what the discontent and disaffection among 20 per cent people in the state means. The deadlock between the suffering and aggrieved employees and the "adamant" state government is not because of the former. The deadlock is because of the unaccommodating attitude of the latter. It's now basically a story of repression and resistance. The NC-Congress coalition government says that it has no money in its treasury to meet the employees' demands and that it would pay the sixth pay commission arrears in several installments. There is no taker for the government's suggestion because the state government got what it demanded from the central government for the current financial year. That it got beyond its expectation could be seen from the statements the Chief minister and the Finance Minister made after meeting the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission. Both of them placed on record their gratitude to New Delhi saying it was for the first time that they got what they demanded. Hence, there is no reason why should the state government not concede the demands of its employees. The employees are the assets; they are not a curse. It is the duty of the state government to meet their genuine demands. And, if the state government believes that its policy of senseless repression would draw away the aspirations of the employees or deter them, then it is obvious that the authorities are living in a fool's paradise. The policy of repression would not succeed. Outmaneuvering and facing repressive measures on any scale, the employees will fight valiantly and finally succeed. There should be no doubt about it. The state government is not fighting the people of Jammu province. The state government is taking cudgels with employees across the state. It's totally a different issue. The state government just can take recourse to the policy of divide and rule to kill the employees' movement. It can purchase a few but not many. The government needs to understand all this and undertake measures designed to avert the impending showdown. After all, the employees are not demanding something that is not due to them. They are simply demanding payment of sixth pay commission arrears and it is their right. If the ministers and legislators could increase their salaries manifold only in March this year and at a time when the employees were already agitating demanding arrears. There would get their arrears in one. There should be no doubt about. After all, they control everything. More over, there cannot be any comparison between the ruler and the employees. The poor employees deserve special care and extraordinary attention as they live from hand to mouth in this very costly and "corrupt" India. The state government would do well to take cognizance of the fact that the determination on the part of and resistance from the employees, and not the official policy of repression, would finally succeed. The statesmanship and political sagacity demand appreciation of this fact. One can only hope that good sense would finally prevail and the state government would meet the demands of its employees, both retired and serving before it is too late. A positive gesture on the part of the state government would go a long way in tackling the human issue and ensuring peace in the state. The state government just can't afford to open another front when Jammu is already on the boil and the trouble-makers and anti-India forces in Kashmir are exploiting to the hilt the July 31 Sopore incident. Let's see what the state government would finally do. |
