In Omar's Kashmir, condoling death is a crime | SP Sopore transferred | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 2: In Kashmir condoling demise is considered an act `prejudicial to the security of state'. People desirous of visiting the bereaved Sopore family who lost one of its members to police torture, have been put under house arrest to prevent them from visiting the apple town. The administration fears another agitation if separatists and pro-Indian politicians are allowed to visit the town. Meanwhile, the MoS Home chaired a meeting and ordered transfer of SP Sopore. But will it help? The meeting gave overall control of the investigation to another officer, Muneer Ahmad Khan but transferred the SP for `ensuring free and fair investigation'. The MoS , therefore, admitted flaws in his system. The `erring' SP, MoS believes, is strong enough to hamper investigation even if his senior officer is there to monitor proceedings round the clock. While this drama goes on, the restrictions on separatists, pro-Indian leaders and civil society workers to visit Sopore has evoked severe criticism. Parvez Imroz, the president of Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) said the administration expects the people to be extremely indifferent and insensitive to killings effected by men in uniform. "This strange attitude of the administration led to last year's agitation that left 120 persons dead", he said. While elaborating he said when a youth gets killed in police action, his relatives and friends will protest. "The police showeres bullets on them in the garb of upholding peace. The police expect them to accept this brutality without even voicing their concern. In a democratic set up, people must have a right to protest. And when you take away this right you are instigating violence", he said. The police is accused of killing a youth in custody. Pro-Indian Mehbooba Mufti who also heads the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was taken into custody and detained at her official residence when she tried to reach Sopore to condole the death. Similarly separatist leaders including Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Syed Ali Geelani have been placed under house arrest for similar reasons. Geelani has called for strike Wednesday to protest the incident. Mirwaiz addressed a press conference at his residence today and supported Geelani's strike call. A PDP leader, who enjoys close proximity to Mehbooba talked to Early Times on conditions of annonymity. Holding the police responsible for last year's agitation, he said the Valley stands on a keg od kerosene. If the situation is not handled properly, anything can happen. Taking a dig at the Chief Minister, he said a person who boasts of his democratic values bans people from condoling the death of a youth. "Transferring a police officer will not make any difference. The police chief of the area should have been taken into custody on the day the youth was killed", he said. |
