| Dalit organisations stage protest in MP | | | BHOPAL, NOV 30 Dalit organisations today staged protests at several places in Madhya Pradesh against alleged desecration of B R Ambedkar's statue in Kanpur and demanded action against the accused. Though no untoward incident was reported, police were maintaining a sharp vigil in view of violence during similar protests in Maharashtra, police said. Activists of Dalit groups staged a roadblock here for nearly an hour and shouted slogans against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, Additional Superintendent of Police G K Pathak saidI. The protestors also burnt Yadav's effigy at Roshanpura square, police said. A large number of dalit activists took out a rally in Mhow in Indore district and submitted a memorandum to a Sub-Divisional Magistrate demanding immediate action against those reponsible for the alleged desecration. The protestors also carried candles and took out a rally at Indore last night. THANE: Police fired in the air to disperse violent demonstrators at Ulhasnagar today who were protesting alleged desecration of Ambedkar statue in Kanpur, a top police official said here. "There was some firing in order to disperse the crowds....The situation is under control now and all the protestors have been dispersed," Thane Police Commissioner D Sivanandan said. Meanwhile, the railway police said some compartments of a local train were also torched by the protestors apart from the five coaches of the Deccan Queen that were burnt earlier in the day. Fire fighting efforts are on, they said. Sivanandan, however, dismissed reports of curfew being imposed in Ulhasnagar town saying the situation is under control. |
