Custodial killings stir up political waters in Kashmir again | Why Jammu politicians 'choose' silence when such crime happen in Jammu? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 3: Sopore has once again stirred political waters of Kashmir which remained relatively calm for the last two years over the issue of custodial killings. Both separatist camp as well as mainstream political parties, political stalwarts in individual capacities are once again up in arms over the killing, genuinely so as the crime is unpardonable indeed. But ironically , this crime though of equal magnitude, no matter with different backgrounds of the victim, Jammu and Jammu based parties as well as politicians have always chosen to maintain silence as and when such crimes came to for in this region. Kashmir region has a reason to raise hue and cry over the custodial killings as the number of such killings is far more than what is reported from Jammu region over the last two decades. The swelled number may be one of the reason for politicians of all hues to raise their voice and concern over the crime by police authorities who are expected to be saviours of life. It is pertinent to mention here that state, as per the record registered by J&K state Human Rights Commission has witnessed around 341 custodial killings, most of which are reported from Kashmir region followed by the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region . Notwithstanding the contrasting numbers, the political corridors in Jammu have always been seen never coming to fore in a manner in which their counterparts, cutting across the political lines in Kashmir region take on the government and authorities at the helm. Be it National Conference or PDP, both the regional parties , as and when in opposition rake up the issue to the hilt. Even some leaders of national parties having local political constituencies muster courage to lambast the governments that be, for such crime having happened during their regime. On the contrary, Jammu based political parties be that those in opposition like BJP and or for that matter always vocal Panthers, or Congress that always matters in so far as the political issues are concerned, seldom come forward with open and bold statements, leave alone staging protests or vehemently asking for justice in favour of the victim and action against the culprits. Infact, ironically enough, though very less in numbers, may be few over the years, such killings that took place within the city or its outskirts in the police custody , have never seen hue and cry beyond a week or so as against in Kashmir where the issue turns the situation and entire atmosphere violent even now, when the political atmosphere has improved significantly. The issue of custodial killings in Jammu region never gained political momentume nor do the politicians over here bother to 'waste' their energies on this, no matter the crime is of serious nature. There have been accusations often from the victims' side Jammu based polictians instead of asking for action against the erring cops, there have been attempts from some politicians in the past allegedly to shield them or ensure the matter gets hushed up with due course of time. While BJP, Pnathers Party or Congress leaders choose to maintain silence, so is the attitude here from the leaders of PDP and NC, whose party leaderships conduct in a contrasting manner in Kashmir. |
