Air India to operate Air Service to Kargil: Akhoon | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Aug 4: Modalities for operating the proposed Air Service to Kargil were discussed at high level meeting held here today under the chairmanship of Minister for CA&PD and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon.
Minister while highlighting the need for operation of Civilian Air Service informed that the proposed Air service would be feasible in view of heavy rush of passengers especially during the winter months when the District remains cut off due to heavy snowfall. On an average about 50 passengers will avail the service, it was given out.
Minister said the service besides providing round the year air connectivity to the passengers, would help to exploit the tourism potential of the District Kargil. It was informed that operation of ATR 42 Aircraft to and fro Kargil is technically convenient. Air India Authority said that initially 45 seater aircraft would to pressed into service which can be extended in future.
It was also proposed that the Air service shall be run on the pattern of North Eastern Air services to make it economically viable. Basic infrastructure for Air services including metrological support are already in place at the Kargil airport, it was informed. It was decided that the modalities in this connection will be finalized at a meeting with the Union Civil Aviation Minister and concerned Airport Authority of India at New Delhi shortly.
