Life returns to normal in Kashmir after day-long bandh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 4 : Life returned to normal in the summer capital Srinagar and other major towns and tehsil headquarters after a day-long strike in protest against the alleged custodial death of a youth in Sopore police station on the intervening night of July 30 and 31. Yesterday's bandh was called by breakaway Hurriyat Confernce (HC) and supported by another faction of the Harriyat headed by Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq.
Shops and business establishment reopened this morning and traffic on all routes was plying, leading to massive traffic jams on busy routes, particularly in the civil lines.
Government offices, banks and other public sector undertakings were also functioning normally. After declaring holiday yesterday in response to strike call following apprehension of violence, educational institutions were also functioning normally today.
The apple township of Sopore, in north Kashmir, which observed strike from July 31, also returned to normal with all shops and business establishments reopened and traffic plying normally on all routes.
The death of Nazim Rashid Shalla, son of a former police officers, in police custody evoked massive condemnation from mainstream and separatist organisations.
The government has already suspended three police personnel, attached a Deputy Superintendent of Police (operations) and shifted SP.
Besides a Magisterial probe, police has also initiated separate inquiry into the incident.
Reports of normalcy were received from other districts and tehsil headquarters in the Kashmir valley.
