Special extension lecture on “Glaciers in Ladakh” organized at DLL | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, August 4: The Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu organized a special extension lecture on “The Truth About Global Warming: A Case Study of Glaciers in Ladakh” at the seminar hall. Professor Rajinder Kumar Ganjoo, Director, Institute of Himalayan Glaciology, University of Jammu spoke on the issue and educated the students on the various cycles of climate change that operate on the scale of millions of years, thousands of years and hundreds of years. Dr Poonam Dhawan, Director, Department of Lifelong Learning, Dr. C.M.Seth, Chairman, World Wide fund (WWF-India) and former Chairman, J&K State Pollution Control Board, Prof Baidyanath Labh, Department of Buddhist Studies, Prof Anil Raina, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, Dr Sanjay Sharma, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu, Dr. Kavita Suri, Assistant Director , DLL who coordinated the programme, DLL faculty members including Dr Priyanka Sharma, Dr Bharti Prabhakar, Dr Pallavi Sachdeva, Dr Sandeep Singh, Sita Anand, Rewa Khajuria and many others were also present at the occasion. In his special extension lecture, Prof R.K.Ganjoo focused on the debate on the facts about global warming and climate change. He said it is after the controversial statement made by Prof. Hasnain on the complete melting of Himalayan glaciers by 2025 AD that was very widely quoted in the reports of WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) that it became absolutely essential for the people working on climate to educate non-scientists about the facts and myths of global warming / climate change. Prof R K Ganjoo has significantly contributed in the study of Himalayan glaciers vis-à-vis climate change/global warming and has carried out studies on the glaciers of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh which provided substantial data to contradict the statement made by IPCC on the complete disappearance of Himalayan glaciers in next two/three decades. His lecture also highlighted the climate change the planet earth has undergone since its birth when there was no trace of human and industries and also threw light on the various factors that causes these cycles of climate change. Speaking at the occasion, Prof Poonam Dhawan, Director, Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu said that global warming is one of the most important issues before the world community today. She said the DLL is spreading awareness about this issue through its various programmes in schools, colleges and University. Speaking at the occasion, Dr. C.M.Seth, Chairman, WWF-India, J&K said one of the most important issues confronting the planet earth is undoubtedly the threat of global warming. Dr Anil Raina, HoD Environment Sciences, JU also spoke at the occasion and congratulated the DLL for organizing an extension lecture on such an important issue.
