Amarnath yatra progressing smoothly, lingam melts | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Aug 4: Despite melting of self made Ice-Shivlingam, the annual pilgrimage to the holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir is going on smoothly, though the number of yatris has come down sharply. The self made ice-Shivlingam in the cave shrine, situated at 13,500 feet, has now melted completely, official sources said. They said the number of pilgrims visiting the shrine has come down sharply compared to first one month, when an average of more than 20,000 yatris were having darshans of the ice-Shivlingam daily. Yatra officials said that 870 pilgrims, including sadhus, women and children today left Baltal for cave shrine through shortest route. Similarly, 961 pilgrims also left Nunwan Pahalgam base camp for the holy cave this morning. This was the lowest number of pilgrims, since the commencement of the pilgrimage on June 30, who left for the cave today. So far, more than 6.30 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance to the Ice-Shivlingam in the cave shrine. Majority of them have since returned to their homes. About 90 pilgrims, besides two local porters, had died during the period due to cardiac arrest and other ailments. |
