Mushrooming of shops at railway stations pose security risk | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 4: Mushrooming of unlicensed food stalls, fruit vendors and mobile shops within the premises of Jammu Railway station pose security risk to safety of thousands of passengers waiting in the arena before boarding their train. Though the government is aware of risk this mushrooming posses but neither the railway police force nor the railway authorities are taking steps which are otherwise required to be taken. The freedom and the ease with which any one and everyone is at liberty to sell goods within the railway station premises does point to alleged nexus between official authorities and the businessmen who are working on the railway station. Presence of these temporary food stalls, fruit stalls, snack bars lead to assembly of large number of outstation passengers at one place and it further adds to the miseries of security personnel deployed on duty to protect rail passengers and prevent any other anti-national activity. There is no check on the activity of unlicensed vendors. Unconfirmed reports suggest that easy money pocketed by select police personnel make it convenient for unlicensed vendors to easily set their shops and sell goods to passengers at exorbitant rates. Recently, when a senior officer of the railway police conducted inspection, he took note of mushrooming of food stalls and had directed the GRP authorities to regularly monitor activities of vendors and avoid entry of unlicensed vendors.
