EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Aug 4: After the lapse of almost fours years, Samba police have finally established the alleged rape and suicide of a B Ed girl student by arresting the accused, an army personnel, who forced the girl to end her life in the hostel premises at Bari Brahmana.
The B Ed college student Anjana Sihag of Rajasthan was found dead in hostel premises on September 16 2007 and an initial inquiry under 174 CrPC was conducted where it was found that girl student consumed poison after she was raped. During search of her hostel room police recovered some love letters and dependent card of Army having name of Aman Kumar bearing the seal of Lt Colonel.
Initially the case was closed by police citing reason of simple suicide but the case later got reopened when new district police chief Israr Khan was approached by the father of the deceased girl Professor Umaid Singh Siag with report of postmortem of girl in which the torture marks and gang rape on the deceased was mentioned.
Source revealed to Early Times that the arrest of the accused Abdul Gaffar, a clerk in Army, was made on the directions of the court. Political pressure is stated to be the reason behind delay and investigation in the case, sources added.
Police sources giving information said that the Police officers of Special Investigation Team (SIT) included Incharge SIT inspector Anu Sharma, SDPO Bari Brahmana Naresh Singh supervised by SSP Samba Israr Khan produced the evidences, four independent witnesses and details of the incident before court and accordingly on the direction of court arrested the army person. "The legal formalities are being conducted by police to produce the accused army jawan before court"' SSP Samba Israr Khan said adding that a court's letter was also dispatched to the Northern Command Udhampur for his arrest.
The mystery of Aman Kumar got solved when police, along with a letter seeking his presence in the matter, also sent his photograph to the Northern Command. Pointing out the accused had imprinted his photograph on the corner of a letter written to the girl, Khan said, it was on the basis of that photograph that Northern Command identified him as Abdul Gaffar. With the intervention of GOC-in-C Northern Command Lt Gen K T Parnaik and the Army Commander from Southern Command, the Army jawan who posed himself as Captain and was wanted by Samba police in connection with the alleged torture, rape and suicide case of a young B.Ed college student, was handed over to Bari Brahmana police. However, earlier it was alleged that army was shielding the accused. The jawan who was taken into the preventive custody by Army authorities in South shifted him to a local Army unit at Bari Brahmana for producing him before police for carrying forward investigations into this criminal case.
When the accused Abdul Gaffar was grilled he revealed that he managed to prepare fake I-Card and projected himself as Aman Kumar. The card, purported to have been issued by a Lt Colonel, show the girl as wife of Aman Kumar (No. 15174560-H/GNR/CLK of 103 MC,MF, DET Unit). He told police that he had love affair with the girl during their college time in 2003 in Rajasthan, but in 2005 he got job in army and was posted in Hyderabad. Later he was posted in Srinagar and then in Northern Command Headquarters, Udhampur in 2006 where he came to know that Anjana was studying in Dogra BEd college at Bari Brahmana and made contact with her. He further told police that being clerk he somehow prepared a fake I-card of a captain and dependent card to win the confidence of the girl.

When she came to know his real identity she developed relation to another B Ed college student identified as Satpal of Himachal Pradesh. She also gave the same cell phone to Satpal, gifted to her by the accused Gaffar. He told police that on September 16, 2007 Gaffar called her to a Jammu based hotel where he forcefully raped her. Police sources said that postmortem report of girl also revealed bruises on girl's body. The girl later went to the B Ed college hostel premises and consumed poison. She was rushed to the GMC hospital where on September, 20, 2007 she died.
