For separatists house arrest is a bliss; freedom a curse! | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 4: The Government prevents Hurriyat leaders from coming out of their homes by placing them under house arrest. But do they really want to come out at times when government obliges them by placing a few of constables at their doors? Late in the evening the leaders issue statements accusing the government of crushing dissent and disconnecting the leaders from their people. This is news and most of the media carry it. Conscious people across the globe express solidarity with the detained leaders. A minister while talking to media persons last week said the separatists request the government to place them under house arrest whenever they feel the people want their presence on the outside. The minister's claim cannot be rejected on the face of it. Impartial quarters have confirmed such reports. The administration, therefore, bails out the separatists by placing them under house arrest. The separatists have found it increasingly difficult to live up to the expectations of the general public. Arrest or house arrest in fact saves them from embarrassment. During the past three years, the youth have taken over the leadership. Leaders like Geelani have been made to explain their position. The Hizbul Mujahideen Chief, Syed Salah-ud -Din who commanded respect from one and all during the past two decades saw irate youth setting ablaze his effigies. Other leaders had to take a back seat. They almost became irrelevant as stone pelting youth ran the show. The government, therefore, helps the separatist leaders to stay relevant by placing them under house arrest. The house arrest serves dual purpose. The leader's wish to stay away from the masses is fulfiled and at the same time he enjoys homely comforts as well. Of course Geelani wants to come out of his residence but what can he do apart from delivering a fiery speech. For the information of one and all, the leaders including Geelani followed the public mood during the past three years. In 2008 when people were out on the roads, the leadership was in deep slumber. The 2009 agitation was launched by Shopian Majlis-e Mashawarat- a local group. And last year when the agitation was on, Geelani was behind the bars. The government also gives undue importance to `dead wood' by arresting them. Some of them have been rejected by their own organizations. But when the administration arrests them, they suddenly become important. Most of the people believe that the government keeps some leaders `alive'. They play crisis managers when situation goes out of control for the government. |
