Contractual lecturers’ fast unto death enters day 7 | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 5 (KNS): For the seventh consecutive day today, the government failed to break stalemate with college contractual lecturers who are on fast unto death. As part of their ongoing indefinite strike since June 27, around 50 representatives of 650 contractual lecturers have been on fast unto death since Saturday. They are demanding change in the nomenclature; monthly wages equivalent to the basic salary of the post they are holding; one time exemption in NET/SET; and end to the new norm of six classes per day. “Neither did anyone come to us from the government, nor was there any communication made. The strike is continuing uninterrupted,” president JK college contractual teachers association (JKCCTA), Dr Mohammed Maqbool, said. The number of hospitalized lecturers has reached 15 with two, Abid Khaliq and Haider, of degree college Sopore hospitalized for dehydration and low blood pressure. They were still in hospital till last reports. The lecturers have been staying round the clock in tents erected at press enclave here. In the holy month of Ramadhan, they have been keeping fast by taking a glass of water for Sehri and Iftaar. Pertinently, the strike that includes boycott of class and other co-curricular activities had brought the work in colleges to a stand still. While the permanent faculty was visibly unable to manage the crisis the government chose to order 10 day summer break, ending August 10.
