Jammu, Nov 30
Speaker Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Mr. Tara Chand has asked the Flood Control department to start protection work of Chenab bunds in Pargwal areas well in advance to ensure river causes no damage to the flood prone areas during monsoon.
Inspecting works during his daylong tour of Pargwal area along with team of engineers of Irrigation and Flood Control department Jammu, the Speaker underscored the need of strengthening weak portions and plugging of breaches which have taken place during the last floods on Chenab river.
He was informed that the Central Government has sanctioned ‘Anti Erosion Project’ meant for protection of areas under flood threats of river Chenab in Akhnoor tehsil. The total cost of project is Rs. 27 crore and for first phase, Rs. 6 crore have been released which are likely to be spent during the current financial year.
The main objective of the project is to protect the agricultural land from erosion due to frequent floods in Chenab River in Pargwal and other areas of Akhnoor tehsil.
Speaker also inspected vulnerable sites located near the thickly populated areas, which face constant threat of flash floods in the rainy season. He directed the engineers to give priority to the identified spots and complete these works at the earliest. He urged the engineers to apply latest techniques for channeling the water of Chenab River at Pargwal and other locations to minimize the chances of flood threat so that the life and property of the people are saved.
He lauded the efforts of Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad for getting this special project sanctioned for the people of border areas who have already suffered a lot on many counts.
