| Patil asks opposition not to pressure Govt on Afzal | | | New Delhi, Nov 30 Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said in Lok Sabha not to pressure the Government to rush with decision on the mercy petition of Mohd Afzal Guru, the parliament attack case convict. Patil, while replying to an adjournment motion on internal security in Lok Sabha said the Government shall have to be very careful in view of Supreme Court's recent judgment for judicial review of the proper consideration of clemency petitions. Pleading with the opposition "not to create situation that is harmful for unity and harmony of the country", Patil said they should have faith and confidence and wait for Government's decision on Afzal case, assuring that "law will take its own course and constitutionally we will like to behave". He warned that one is likely to commit mistakes, if subject to "extra constitutional pressure". He pointed out that it took more than four years even in deciding the clemency petition of the killers of late former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi . His Junior minister Ragupathy told the Rajya Sabha that "no specific guidelines can be framed for examining the mercy petitions as power under Article is of widest amplitude, can contemplate myriad kinds and categories of cases with facts and situation varying from case to case". However there are broad guidelines that are generally considered in dealing with the mercy petitions, Ragupathy said. |
