Severe drought condition in Kandi areas of valley: Beigh
8/6/2011 9:34:13 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Aug 6:

Senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beigh has expressed deep concern over the prevailing drought conditions in the valley. In a statement issued here, Beigh seeks to draw the attention of the government towards the problems faced by the resident of Kandi areas of valley.
Addressing the issue of the shortage of drinking water, he highlighted that the supply of freshwater available to Kandy areas is shrinking, because many freshwater resources have dried. Drinking water is not properly available to the residents, taps are running dry and they don’t have choice rather than to drink contaminated water of wells or ponds. There is a dire need to look for the solutions immediately.
If the government doesn’t take remedial steps, there is every possibility of an epidemic of water-related diseases. “Thus providing clean supplies of water to these areas should be the priority of the government and assistance agencies.
Beigh highlighted that the locals are demanding the attention of the government which unfortunately has turned its back towards genuine demands of the locals of Kandi areas. The major hit areas include, Chandoosa, Pachahar, Khanpoora, Delina, Sheeri, Narwara
Raising concerns for the continuing dry spell of weather in valley and alternate issues associated with it, he said, “The direct impact is on reduced crop, forest productivity, reduced water level, and increased death rate of livestock.
However, while emphasizing on the role of the government, Beigh said,
“The government should conduct a field survey of the severely affected areas through District Development Commissioners, to compensate the losses to the farmer’s community.”
He also stressed on the present government to draw plans for the future security of the people, “To avoid catastrophe over the long term, it also is important to act now. Formulation of disaster management programs and by continuing and expanding these programs also can help assure the security against such conditions in future.”
Beigh expressed sympathies with the affected community and prayed for their early recovery from the loss. However he stressed that the farmers should seek more blessings from Allah in the holy month of Ramadhan to come out of this problem.
