Denial of information under RTI Act: CIC warns PIOs
8/6/2011 9:38:40 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Aug 6 (KNS): State Information Commission on Wednesday warned that public information officers who deny information to people under Right to Information Act will not be tolerated at any cost.
Talking to KNS, Chief Information Commissioner, G R Sofi said, “In the last five months the commission has received more than 200 complaints and appeals regarding denial of information by PIOs. 90 percent of these have been disposed and notices have been issued against the erring officials.”
He said that commission received five to seven complaints everyday. “We issue notices to the concerned departments and ask them to provide the information within a month time. However, if somebody needs information before that he can mention the reasons in his application and he will be provided the same within five days,” Sufi told KNS.
The CIC said that most of the complaints received are related to Social Welfare and Rural Development Departments. “All citizens of Jammu and Kashmir can file RTI application alongwith Rs 50 prescribed fee to get information before the concerned PIOs. If the information is denied they can approach first appellate authority who monitor all the PIOs,” he added.
Sufi appealed people especially journalists and lawyers to study RTI Act keenly so that they can realize its importance. “If any PIO denies information without any reason, it won’t be tolerate and the commission will take action against him,” he warned. (KNS)
