8/6/2011 9:39:56 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Aug 6 (KNS): The contractual lecturers’ fast unto death Saturday entered eight day even as the government maintained silence over the issue.
The 50 representatives of the 650 contractual lecturers working in colleges across Kashmir have been on the fats since July 30. They are demanding change in the nomenclature; monthly wages equivalent to the basic salary of the post they are holding; one time exemption in NET/SET; and end to the new norm of six classes per day.
Under the banner of JK college contractual teachers association (JKCCTA), they remained clustered in tents erected at press enclave here.
“We will not end the fast until government comes up with something in black and white,” president JKCCTA, Dr Mohammed Maqbool, said.
Meanwhile, the nodal officer for appointment of contractual lecturers, Prof Kawoosa, held a meeting with JKCCTA, trying to convince it to end strike. However, the meeting concluded unsuccessfully.
“In the meeting we were asked to call off the hunger strike and to give government a chance to work. But we refused to accept it for we have already given government time to work on our demands. We will not agree on anything accept a written order from the government,” Dr Maqbool said.
Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik told KNS that government was in process of restructuring the scheme for contractual lecturers. We have to restructure the scheme and we are working out that. UGC rules say only NET/SET and P HDs are eligible. So we have to accordingly work it out.”
Asked why government didn’t send anybody to talk to the contractual lecturers who are on fast unto death from the last one week, the minister said, “We are in touch with them and on Monday we will again call them.” “Some of the striking lecturers have returned to duties,” he claimed.
