| Long-lasting friend a dream so far ? | | Friendship with a ‘pricetag’ | | Mishu Gupta

Jammu, Aug 6: As world grows to the new introductions on the variegated themes of the inclusions of days celebrated, Friendship Day too falling tomorrow is one more such event awaited for celebration.
How much iota of celebration and in what form the tomorrow’s Day would hold significance among its celebrators, one thing is very certain to come up is that the event is likely to just pass away as one another day in the calendar year with not much significance of it witnessed in any part of this region.
But then there are certain claims that promise to keep the tradition and nomenclature alive, again borrowed from the alien soils.
“We are five friends studying in Jammu University and have been friends for the past five years. We have tiffs but we make up fast. Some guys have tried to break our friendship, but they have not succeeded. We are fortunate to have a friendship based on trust and respect for one another. We give gifts on Friendship Day and promise to cherish our friendship”, say Vikram , Siddhath, Pallavi,Ranjana and Neeraj.
They however were skeptical of making any comment on the culture being borrowed from the foreign origins and also had no big idea to share on the desi and mythical tales of Krishan-Sudama at galore in Indian ethnicity.
A parent of a child whose friends are ever changing due to non-compatibility of ideas among each others narrated their grandparents anecdotes that contained a story of a poor friend Sudama going to his rich friend Krishna’s house, only to come back without asking for anything realizing that begging would dent the bond of strong friendship between the both.
“No nothing of that sort exists today,. This is a material world and everything comes and goes with a price,” said Shruti Tandon, a collegiate who dismissed the idea of long-lasting friendship as a myth in sci-fi world of today.
“Friendship is a priceless gift, especially in this materialistic world. I have a bum-chum and we have shared a deep friendship. For this reason, life has been pleasant despite hardships”, says Akshar.
However, though as a mark of observance of the day falls on August 7 every year, this year too though commercialization of this day has made people more aware of it but unfailing friendship is existing.
But friends can be categorically divided into two types in general—friends who want to be of use and friends who want to use you as “friendship of convenience”. Just like the walking crutch which is put into use when needed but thrown away when not required.
Top most friendships are friendships of convenience. Such friends in the guise of friendship pretend to remain your loyal friend till they
fulfil their goal. In the political circle this kind of friendship is very common.
Strange bed-fellows they are known as—sharing a common platform only for their convenience.
In the materialistic world very few know the value of true friendship. There is very little difference between a ‘friend’ and a ‘fiend’— just the letter ‘r’ makes a world of difference. Just like every saint has a past and every sinner a future, a friend with the passage of time could turn into a fiend and likewise a fiend could suddenly realize your worth and seek your friendship.
