Olive cultivation in J&K needs govt incentive | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 7: Despite having the potential, adequate measures have not been taken by the government in increasing olive oil cultivation in Jammu and Kashmir. Government functionaries said that Department of Horticulture had started taking interest in motivating farmers for cultivating olive in areas of Doda, Bhaderwah, Udhampur and Ramban. However, the olive cultivation has not witnessed any marked improvement because of lack of processing facilities. Some of the cultivators said that in the Jammu area, processing facilities were limited and the cultivators had to cover long distance for getting their produce processed. Official reports said that the Department of Horticulture had started encouraging farmers to take to olive cultivation from 1992 onwards. They said that despite government efforts, total production of olive in various areas of the region of Jammu had not crossed over 21 tonnes which would yield about 350 kilograms of olive oil. Cultivators said that during the last 10 years, area under olive in Jammu region has increased from 150 hectares to 350 hectares and the tardy increase is said to be the result of lack of processing facilities and absence of suitable market cover. Experts said that since olive oil is most suited for tackling various health problems the state Government could help the cultivators in increasing the area under olive cultivation which could prove more profitable to the farmers than the production of other fresh fruits.
