Jammu-Srinagar highway closed due to landslide
8/7/2011 11:12:56 PM
JAMMU, Aug 7 : The 300 km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, connecting J&K with the rest of the country, was closed for traffic today due to landslides, triggered by heavy rains in Ramban district. The highway was closed after a landslide at Digdol and rolling of boulders at Panthal in Ramban district this morning, police said.
The landslide was triggered by continuous heavy rains, they said, adding that the ongoing downpour is creating trouble in clearing the roads, they said. Over 500 vehicles are stranded at various places in Udhampur, Nagrota, Ramban, Patnitop, Banihal and Batote areas of the highway.
The Amarnath yatra convoy, heading for Pahalgam and Baltal Base camps is likely to be halted at Ramban due to the closing of road, they said.
