Attitude of Karan Singh, BJP & Jammu-based NC leaders-II | Central University | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 7: Remember, in February 2002, all the eight BJP MLAs had made common cause with the NC when the NC-led "anti-Jammu" government moved an amendment to the constitution seeking ban on delimitation of the assembly constituencies for at least 35 years because the BJP thought the adoption of the anti-democratic and unconstitutional amendment would promote the "just cause of Jammu." Again, remember, 7 out of 11 BJP MLAs voted for the NC and the Congress candidates seeking election to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council on April 13 this year and they did so for what? Obviously, to promote the Jammu cause! Again, in 2008, while one BJP MLA had voted for Farooq Abdullah, candidate for Rajya Sabha, at least 3 BJP MLAs had voted against Shamsher Singh Manhas, presently president of the state BJP. They had voted for the NC candidates because they felt a vote for the NC candidates would be a vote for the "cause of Jammu." That the BJP has always been for the "cause of Jammu" could also be seen from its 2008 election manifesto. Before 2008, the demands of the BJP ranged from regional development board to regional council to reorganization of the state to a political instrument invested with "legislative, executive and financial powers." The 2008 election manifesto neither demanded regional development board/regional council/reorganization of the state/political instrument invested with legislative, executive and financial powers, nor did it suggest any other instrument aimed at ending discrimination with the people of Jammu province. And, still the BJP said that it was committed to the "cause of Jammu." It's no wonder than that the agitating student community and others associated with it have termed the BJP's August 5 statement as "another attempt at hoodwinking the people" and pooh-poohed the BJP's claim. The fact of the matter is that the people have no faith whatever in the BJP because the conduct of the BJP has been such. There is broad consensus that "it is the BJP that has defeated the cause of Jammu by hobnobbing with the Kashmiri leadership." So much so that the people say that the "BJP takes the plunge not to make the people's movement a success but to sabotage it for obvious reasons." As for the Jammu-based NC leaders, less said the better. They have at no point of time represented Jammu. On the contrary, they have all through represented their Kashmiri masters in Jammu and what they stand for. The NC is one party that is known for its bias against Jammu and its people, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs included. It was a Kashmir-based, Valley-centric and anti-Jammu outfit in the past; it is a Kashmir-based, Valley-centric and anti-Jammu outfit today; and it will be a Kashmir-based, Valley-centric and anti-Jammu in the future as well. The NC has hatred for the people of Jammu because its leadership never forgets that Jammu ruled over Kashmir for more than 100 years (1846-1947), as also because they have never supported its demand for greater autonomy or loose relationship between the state and New Delhi. One would not cross the line if one may say so that the NC is the mother of all ills afflicting Jammu and its people and that the people of Jammu province would continue to suffer so long as the NC remains at the helm of affairs. One would also not exaggerate things if one may say so that the NC has destroyed the people of Jammu socially, culturally and economically in collaboration with the Jammu-based Congress and BJP legislators and the essentially anti-Jammu New Delhi. It's true that half a dozen Jammu-based NC leaders issued a statement on August 5 to identify themselves with the Jammu cause. But it cannot be denied that they did so out of compulsion and under pressure from the agitating student community. It's not surprising that no one in Jammu has given any credence whatever to the statement they issued a coupler of days ago in their desperate attempt to identify themselves with the student's cause. If one goes by the people's mood then one cay say without any hesitation that neither Karan Singh nor the BJP and the NC have inspired the people of Jammu province by their interventions through press statements or through what may be termed as lip service.
