Opt for truce and avoid confrontation
8/8/2011 9:00:15 PM

BJP MLAs suspended from the party on charge of defying the party whip during the Legislative Council election in April last seem to be somewhat defiant. This is indicated by the way they have asked the party high command to expedite the final decision on their future. This way they want to know whether the party high command was willing to revoke the suspension order ser ved against them or keep it pending for an indefinite period. It seems that the suspended MLAs have lost patience and hence they are not prepared to suffer humiliation, as they put it, by remaining suspended from the BJP.Reports do suggest that in case the party high command delayed the final decision the suspended MLAs may be forced to resort to an extreme step. Even after the lapse of four months the party high command has not been in a position to come to any conclusion. The high command is sandwiched between indiscipline of the suspended MLAs and the indispensability of these seven MLAs who could cause much damage to the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir if the suspension order was not revoked.
Two things continue to amaze and puzzle observers in Jammu and Kashmir. One is the way he suspended MLAs have started denying the allegations that they had voted against the party candidate in the council election. The denial seems to be stronger than it was when the action was initiated against them. They also blame some of the party MLAs who had been given a clean chit by the BJP high command for having defied the party whip.Secondly, the way the suspended MLAs have cast their lot behind Chaman Lal Gupta, leader of the BJP in the state Assembly is a new development. At one stage the party high command had decided to revoke suspension order served against six MLAs but the move was postponed after the six MLAs conveyed to Delhi that they would not rejoin the party unless expulsion order served against their leader Chaman Lal Gupta was not revoked. This means that the suspended MLAs have made up their mind to confront the BJP high command even if they were to lose membership of the Assembly.
If one reads between the lines the issue of cross voting and the action the BJP high command took against seven MLAs one may find that the party high command had acted in haste and the suspended MLAs had thrown to winds the party discipline for which the BJP and the saffron brigade is known for. Whether the seven MLAs are in a position to rock the BJP boat in the state or not the entire episode has started causing erosion in the organisation. Those who do not accept it should know that during the last four months groups of BJP supporters, including some workers, had joined the PDP in the Jammu region. In the initial stage those who favoured strong action against those legislators who had indulged in cross voting in the interest of party discipline have started harbouring fears on the extent of damage the seven MLAs can cause to the party if they are thrown out. Even though the seven MLAs believe that they have the potential of harming the party they are keen to see suspension order revoked so that they are not thrown out of the party. Hence they have started mounting pressure on the high command by filing petitions against the state party Chief and by asking the p/arty high command to expedite the final decision. In the interest of the party revocation of the suspension order should be preferred to axing the MLAs from the organization.
