Strike balance between ecology, development: CS | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 8: Maintaining that forest protection is vital for eco-balance, Chief Secretary Madhav Lal has stressed on judicious use of forest land for construction of important roads to link up remote areas. He said minimum felling of trees should be done as and when there is pressing need to construct a road, advising change of alignments over cutting of trees. Chairing Forest Advisory Committee meeting convened to examine proposals for forest clearance for PMGSY roads and other structures, the Chief Secretary said that balance has to be struck between ecology and development for sustenance of flora and fauna. “We have to devote fullest attention towards protection of forests while allowing development works”, he said and asked the officers to analyze in detail the proposals put forth for forest clearance keeping in view environmental aspects also. Madhav Lal asked the officers that rejuvenation of depleted areas should form the important activity of forests and other departments referring to the restoration of forest wealth in Patnitop and other areas where development works are scheduled to be undertaken. Forest Advisory Committee approved several proposals involving minimum possible felling of trees while many proposals were returned for realignment and further Environmental Impact Assessment study. Meeting was attended by Commissioner Secretary Forests, Shantmanu, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, R. D. Tiwari, Chief Conservator of Forests, H. S. Salathia, Chief Wildlife Warden, A. K. Singh, Director Soil Conservation, Mukherjeet Sharma, Director Environment and Remote Sensing, R. K Kesar, Environmentalist, S. P. Singh Dutta and other senior officers.
